Less than 24 hours after the jets flew into buildings and a field, I went to work at the OCE office in Ontario, California.
The office is located just north of the approach pattern into Ontario International Airport. All summer, we would look out the windows as the Southwest and other airliners flew just a few hundred feet off the ground every 15 minutes.
We hardly noticed them.
That September morning, the sun crept over a sad and somber country. Unlike every other day, there were no man made shadows cast down from above.
On September 12, 2001, not one plane was in the air. Not one. At first, we didn't notice, then as the time slipped past 9:07 AM, we all approached the windows and gazed into a crisp, blue sky. Stark in its beauty, devastating in its solitude.
By 9:15AM, we had all left to go home.
