Thousands of workers are being retired, re-trained, fired, and hired. Where do you fall in the spectrum of increasing disruption of the job market?
While perusing my twitter feed, I clicked on a tweet that lead me to Bloomberg's article titled, Unglamorous but Effective Ways to Create More Jobs. The article described how Ohio, with a 7.2% unemployment rate, is creating its future and not depending on the government. I like that. They're owning it and moving forward. Where else are there opportunities to move forward?
According to the 2011 Employee Job Satisfaction and Engagement by the Society for Human Resource Management**, only 83% of employees are satisfied with their existing job/career. That leaves 17% of employed people...unsatisfied.

Dear UnHappily Employed,
How are you? I've heard your thinking of making a change. That's good news, I know someone who's looking for a job and available to take your place when you leave. No worries, that is how this whole thing works.
Remember, no matter what you choose next, its important in ways you do not even realize yet. I know because I used to be part of the 17%. Breaking through the fear wasn't easy, but I did it and I know you can too. Be true to you. Your health, family, and life are depending on it.
You can do it.
Sincerely,
JAS

There are times when we make tough decisions and lots of change happens. Other times change happens to us and we wonder what the heck happened. Those are the times we look back, see 20/20 and in time say thank you. Some are stuck on the fence and are increasingly overwhelmed, bored, frustrated, tired, run ragged, exasperated, defeated etc. doing their best to hold it together.
Regardless of where you are today, here are a few bits that may stimulate some new thoughts. You never know what tomorrow may bring.
It's Never Greener On the Other Side of the Fence
Making a decision to change because you think its greener on the other side of the fence, almost never works out. If you're sitting on the fence of indecision, should I stay or should I go...there are ways to resolve and revolve. Go deeper.
If you're resigning, do not hide the truth about why you are leaving
Choosing to resign is not easy, but there is a cadence. During my first of recent resignations, a mentor recommended that I explicitly share why I was leaving. What I realized is being clear, and communicating the truth during a transition supports both the giver and the receiver about what's ready to change.
Know Your Standards
Some may feel lucky to just be employed, but I believe there is an exchange of value for value. No one holds power over the other. If there is a power over the other, then someone is getting sucked off of or sucked on, whichever way you want to look at it.

Jen, solid read and great advice. A great read I highly recommend for all is Michael Gerber's book E-Myth Revisited. While the entire book is a fantastic read for any entrepreneur, what particularly struck me was in line with your thought on "greener pastures".
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading Ken, and the book suggestion. My thought on "greener pastures" was from actual experience. :-)
